The 1997 Bears came into the season not knowing what to expect, as it was considered by many to be a rebuilding year. But they proved themselves on the field, finishing the season with just one loss, and going on to win the first ever state tournament at the Mat-Su Valley invitational. The Bears defeated Ketchikan in the championship game. The tournament was limited to teams from Southeast, Kodiak, and the Mat-Su Valleys.
