                                 Sitka, Alaska
June 5,2014       JDHS 6        South High of Anchorage 7
                                          15 innings**

**An Anchorage announcer stated that the 15 inning game between Juneau and South was the greatest high school game he had announced.
In the first inning South scored a run. The Bears responding in the bottom of the first by scoring 2 runs. After 1 out Grant Ainsworth hit a triple to deep centerfield.Kellen Johansen hit a single to right scoring Grant, then stold second. Nathan Klein hit another triple to center scoring Kellen.
The score remained 2 to 1 Juneau until the top of the 7th inning. When with one out and a count of 1 ball, South's hitter, Valdez hit a home run to tie the game. Bryce Swofford, a resmen, pitched a fine game going 7 full innings, allowing only 2 runs and striking out 7  South batters.

Nathan Klein stared the 8th inning. The score, 2 to 2, remain until the 13th inning. Juneau did have runners on 1st and 2nd with one out in the 10th inning but stranded a runner on 3rd. In the 13th South scored only 1 run on 2 hits and 2 BBs. The score is now 3 to 2 South. Leading off in the bottom of the 13rd is Grant Ainsworth, who on the first pitch hits a home run. Tie game again. Nathan Klein also pitched a fine game, giving up 1 earned run on 2 hits while striking out 6 South hitters in 6 innings.
In the top of the 14th Jacob Thibodeau goes from first base to the mound. For the first time in the game Juneau's defense weakens. In the 14th South's lead off batter singles. The next reaches first base on an error and the next batter is hit by a pitch. Now South has the bases loaded with no outs. Thibodeau is now outstanding. He strikes out the next batter on 3 pitches and thenthe second batter on 5 pitches. Two outs bases loaded the next batter hits the first pitch to deep center where Johansen gets ball on glove for the final out. Juneau is retired 1,2, 3 in the bottom of the inning. Score still 3 to 3.

We now entered what will be the final inning the 15th. South will score 4 runs on only 2 hits but 2 costly errors and 1 BBs.Thibodeau also pitched a fine game  giving up 2 runs on only 3 hits in 2 full innings. Errors and walks the hazards of baseball harms
Juneau.

Botom of the 15th first 2 batters are out. Up comes Ainsworth, the General, on the first pitch he singles (his 4th hit of the game, 4 for6,an RBI and he scores 3 runs) to left. What happens next? Kellen singles, Nathan singles, Thibedeau singles, and Swofford singles. Score now is 7 to 6 in favor of South. There are now Crimson Bears on first and third. Alas this most exiting game, the greatest Alaska high school game ever played ends, 7 to 6.

Both teams played hard and played together. Some games you win when you should have lost, other games you lose when you should have won. Both teams won in this game. The final score was not in our favor unfortunately. The Juneau Crimson Bears played the baseball game of their young life. The Bears lead for 6 1/3 innings; tied for most of the remaining innings.

=====================================================

Nine seniors graduated from the 2013 baseball team. So Coach Race and the remaining teammates were facing a rebuilding year in 2014.
Let the baseball season begin.
On May 1,2014 the Crimson Bears win the, first game of the season a 7 to 1 victory against Petersburg. Nathan Klein pitched for 5 innings allowing 2 hits and no earned runs. Grant Ainsworth relieved for 2 innings allowing 1 hit and no earned runs.
The Bears won their next 6 games, beating their arch rival, Sitka, twice and their cross town rival, TMHS, once. On May 16th against Ketchikan JDHS loses its first game by a score of 5-2.T he
Bears would go on to beat Ketchikan in the next 2 games and in the process win the regular Southeast conference with a record of 13-3.

In the Region V Tournament JDHS won three games and lost two. On the final day of the tournament the Bears had to play 3 games in order to win the tournament, they won two. However JDHS was off to their 12th state championship tournament out of the 15 that have been held since 2000 and were to play what many felt was the most exiting high school baseball game ever played in Alaska.

                               Team and Individual Statistics

          The 2014 Crimson Bears' Baseball season records are:

Batting Average = H / AB (H=Hits) / (divided by) (AB= At Bats)
                    TEAM Batting Average =573 / 173
= .302

                                                  Nathan Klein .389
                                             Kellen Johansen .371

The better hitters have batting average of .300 or higher. However some hitters may hit lower than .300 but hit more timely hits than hitters with higher batting averages, for example hit when runners are on base or in scoring position (a runner on 2nd or 3rd) or hit to keep a rally going.

The highest Major League batting average belongs to Ty Cobb who, over 24 seasons batted .366. Ty Cobb also won 11 batting titles.

NOTE: all the individual pitching stats listed below are based on pitchers who pitched at least 20 innings.

Pitching Statistics:

Jacob Thibodeau* 1-3      2.33       1.583               1.2                   .226

*Jacob Thibedeau appeared in 9 games as a relief pitcher and 2 games as a starter, winning one and losing one.

ERA= (ER x 7) / IP (Earned Runs x 7innings (in high school baseball) divided (/) by Innings Pitched).
A good ERA is under 4.00

WHIP= (BB+H) / IP
NOTE: WHIP is another way to measure the effectiveness of a pitcher. Two pitchers could have identical ERAs but one pitcher could have a lower WHIP incating that he is a more effective pitcher. For example Pitcher A could give up no runs 1 hit and issue 2 walks. His ERA is 0.00 and his WHIP is ( 2 BB + 1 H / 6 innings pitch) = .600. Pitcher B could give up no runs 7 hits and issue 3 walks. His ERA is 0.00 and his WHIP is (3 + 7 / 6) = 1.66.

A good WHIP is around 1.00 below that is excellant. A poor WHIP is 1.75 or higher.
In our example Pitcher B is allowing nearly 2 runners per inning. If a pitcher continues on that path, trouble ahead. Here Pitcher B most likely had solid defense behind him or he struck out batters thereby pitching a shtutout.

K / BB = Strikeouts / Base on Balls

Opp. BA = Opponent's Batting Average
